So... lately I've been thinking that the song in Disney's The Little Mermaid, Part Of Your World, is about being . At least there are lots of parallels with my experience.

Input welcome.

@kafkaesqueNomad I've seen this headcanon before!

Special interest her peers don't get? ✅

Identification w/ person outside her species? ✅

Many Troubles at nonverbal communication! ✅ Srsly, w/o the ability to overtly say what she wants it's a miscommunication train bc verbal ppl don't meet her in the middle. She's told "body language" and clearly has no intuitive idea what that even is. Urgent faces and flailing? That only moreso? Maybe if she does it more????

Soooo yeah.

@Cobalt

So true and I didn't even look at her behaviour outside of the song. It more or less just occured to me since the remastered version of 1998 (probably only germany?) was recorded with new lyrics and it all felt really off when I watched that.

Extremely off. And the song was stuck in my mind anyways, I identified with it a lot.

@kafkaesqueNomad oh shit that may be why I was so obsessed w that song!

@esp yes, me too!!
Even my brother... he would be called Low Functioning (if it really is autism, my mother reacts irritated and defensive when I ask... which might just mean that, at a time upbringing was still blamed she was considered at fault by some shitty doctor but that's just my assumption)

However, he watched the movie all the time and learnt all the dialogue by heart but barely touched other movies, including those with a similar plot.

@kafkaesqueNomad I can certainly see that being the case for me, at least as a neurotypical speaking to my brother. Never thought of it that way, thank you for the new perspective.

That was one we both watched a lot of growing up.

@Weatherwane

Hi. You're new here, so welcome.
Thanks for your answer here.
(I'm a bit out of it at the moment, think I'd respind more elaborately otherwise)

@Weatherwane

*respind, even.

Thumbs up on your handle and display name.

@kafkaesqueNomad Fret not, we have an eternity to discuss. I only recently realized I had an account here that I don't remember signing up for, so I'm making myself at home.
