wait are people deprecating opengl now??? whats wrong with opengl. opengl is fine!!!! you can draw triangles. u can write comments like: // STATE: DRAWING TRIANGLES. you can draw triangles!!!! whats wrong with it!! isnt that enough for you all

bertrand russell proved that you can make any shape out of triangles. he said he was inspired by his visit to the eiffel tower on the day of its opening, and also watching the moon landings on TV,

if they make a third series of Look Around You it should be a parody of james burke's Connections

@jk Burke already parodied Connections, unfortunately it was self-parody (Connections 2 and 3)

@kara brutal

some of 2 was ok. i think.... maybe

then ofc uve got this: youtube.com/watch?v=RfE8wBReIx which is fucking incredible the most 1990s thing ive ever fuckin seen

@jk gosh I know about this but haven't been able to make myself watch because I want to like James Burke still

@kara i find it very nostalgic and ironic but mainly because this is what every single educational video i saw at school looked like

@kara it takes me back to the 1990s 'eco-craze' where the message in all popular media especially for children was something like "don't damage the habitat of these lovely pokemon" or "look at this 3D computer graphics representing the ozone layer"

i kinda miss it to be honest. everyones bored of the environment now

@jk yeah. it's actually really sad how the environmental movement basically pissed away all their credibility because performative activism over trivia was easier and gave a superficial appearance of achievement, while they shied away from large issues, hoping I guess thats they would be in a stronger position later

like, liberal activists are absolute masters of...kinda standing off to one side and passively harrumphing about big issues

now nobody listens, and it's too late

@kara yeah, the world was so into omni-financialisation at the time (and still is, really, but it was only a couple of decades old, then, if that) that any solution had to be in the form of some kinda "carbon credits" or something, basically just some kind of abstract nonsense that could be plugged into the existing markets and forgotten about as an actual real issue that affects people

@jk @kara all the environmental campaigns I remember from my childhood were of the form "if everyone just uses a little less water/runs their car a little less/ etc" every little grain of sand counts.

And now I look at the numbers and like, no, it's not on the individual and it never was, and I guess ppl got tired of taking cold showers and the world still going to shit cause no one told car companies to "make a little fewer cars" and "use a little less petroleum"

@oneirofaerie @kara i guess nobody wants to tell everyone at wal mart "stop buying all these inexplicably cheap consumer products that you love and throwing them away and buying new ones right after, stop doing that because it's obviously, like, not normal"

@jk @oneirofaerie yeah, I grew up in the '80s, by which time any notion of protest or agitation had been thoroughly watered down into, like, "Hands Across America" and big-ticket music festivals and other such stunts to "raise awareness"

@jk @kara @oneirofaerie The (in my opinion very good) book "Sustainable energy without the hot air" really did put it in very clear terms for me: if every one of us reduced our energy usage by just one per cent, then by the power of our collective action, we'll have reduced energy usage worldwide by one per cent.

(the book is blunt and no-nonsense but optimistic and you can road it for free at withouthotair.com/)

@oneirofaerie @jk @kara A point in this toot reminded me of this Adam Ruins Everything video youtube.com/watch?v=koqNm_TgOZ

@oneirofaerie @jk @kara

Right, but putting everything on the individual's shoulders allowed people to turn against each other and engage in more-environmentally-friendly-than-thou shaming instead of banding together and demanding that corporations use fewer resources, stop depending on planned obsolescence to ensure steady annual revenues, and create durable and repairable products.

@oneirofaerie @kara @jk All that was just about making people feel good about "doing their part" and distracting attention from the fact that government was failing to do perform one of its most basic functions, which is to internalize externalities.

How the fuck do we still not have a carbon tax?
